These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Rooibos interacts with whole categories of medication. Estradiol, Progesterone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Rooibos in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Estradiol, Progesterone
Estradiol, Progesterone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Bijuva (estradiol with progesterone). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 as one of the ways it clears out estrogen. Some lab tests in a dish have shown that rooibos can slow that enzyme down. If that happened in people, your hormone levels could drift a little higher, which might mean more of the usual estrogen-type effects like breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, or spotting.
But please don't worry. This is theoretical and only comes from test-tube research, not from real patients. A cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause a problem. If you plan to use strong rooibos extracts regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on things.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Estradiol, Progesterone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Bijuva combines estradiol and progesterone, and your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break both of them down. Some early lab tests suggest concentrated rooibos extract may slow that enzyme. If it did, these hormones could clear a little slower and build up, which might mean more of the usual side effects like breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, headaches, or mood changes.
Here is the reassuring part: this is only test-tube research, not something seen in real people, and rooibos as a regular cup of tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated extract capsules are the bigger question mark. If you enjoy the tea, sip away, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a strong rooibos supplement.

About Rooibos
What is Rooibos?
- Caffeine-free beverage
- Antioxidant support
- Heart health
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- General wellness
Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage.
