Why this applies to Dexlansoprazole

Dexlansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sulforaphane interacts with.

Theoretically, sulforaphane might increase the levels and effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity and downregulates its expression. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Dexilant (dexlansoprazole). Your body partly clears this acid reducer using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab and animal studies, sulforaphane (the compound concentrated from broccoli and similar veggies) seems to slow that same enzyme down. If it did the same in people, dexlansoprazole could hang around a little longer and its effects could be slightly stronger. With this drug that usually just means more of its mild side effects, like headache, nausea, or diarrhea.

That said, this has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in humans, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Eating broccoli is fine. If you're taking a concentrated sulforaphane supplement, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up.

What Is Dexlansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Dexilant Solutab

Dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsules — sold as Dexilant and available as a generic — are used in patients 12 years of age and older to heal erosive esophagitis (EE), which is damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid. They are also used to keep that damage healed and relieve heartburn over time.

In addition, dexlansoprazole treats heartburn from non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — that is, acid reflux that causes symptoms without visible damage to the esophagus. Both Dexilant and generic dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsules share these same approved uses.
