Theoretically, CYP3A4 inducers might increase the risk of adverse effects from the pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) constituents in tansy ragwort.
Tansy ragwort contains PAs. PAs are substrates of CYP3A4. Theoretically, drugs that induce CYP3A4 might increase the conversion of PAs to toxic metabolites.

First, the most important thing: tansy ragwort is genuinely toxic and isn't safe to take internally at all. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that the liver can convert into harmful byproducts, so I wouldn't recommend it on its own, let alone alongside any medication.

Here's the wrinkle with tipranavir (Aptivus). Tipranavir, especially when boosted with ritonavir, can nudge a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to work faster. That same enzyme is what turns tansy ragwort's alkaloids into their toxic form. So in theory, this combination could speed up the creation of those liver-damaging substances, raising the risk of liver injury. This is a theoretical concern based on lab data, not real patient reports, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, please skip tansy ragwort and check with your pharmacist or doctor before any herbal product.

About Tipranavir

What Is Tipranavir Used For?

Brand name: Aptivus

Aptivus (tipranavir) is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in pediatric patients weighing at least 36 kg (about 79 lbs). It is specifically for people who have already tried other HIV treatments and whose virus has become resistant to more than one protease inhibitor. It is always taken together with a low dose of ritonavir and with other HIV medications.

Aptivus is not recommended for people who have never taken HIV treatment before (treatment-naïve patients). Using tipranavir alongside additional active HIV drugs improves the chances of it working well.
