Cisplatin falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja might stimulate immune function. Theoretically, taking thuja might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the idea behind this caution: Thuja may gently rev up the immune system, while some cancer and transplant medicines work partly by calming it down. On paper, those two effects could pull in opposite directions. With cisplatin, though, I want to be honest with you. Cisplatin fights cancer mainly by damaging tumor cell DNA, not by suppressing your immune system, so this particular concern fits the broader drug category better than it fits cisplatin itself.

This warning is theoretical, based on lab thinking rather than real patient cases, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, during chemotherapy you don't want any surprises. Concentrated thuja oil also contains thujone, which can be toxic. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding it.

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Cisplatin Injection

What Is Cisplatin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Platinol-AQ

Cisplatin Injection is used to treat three types of cancer. For metastatic testicular tumors and metastatic ovarian tumors, it is used as part of combination chemotherapy — alongside other approved cancer medicines — in patients who have already had surgery and/or radiation therapy. For metastatic ovarian tumors, it can also be used alone as a second-line treatment when standard chemotherapy has stopped working and cisplatin has not been tried before.

For advanced bladder cancer (specifically transitional cell bladder cancer) that can no longer be treated with surgery or radiation, Cisplatin Injection is used as a single agent.
