Thyroid Extract and Clomipramine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Oral Drugs

Why this applies to Clomipramine

Clomipramine falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.
Severity Minor Likelihood Likely Evidence A

Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here the concern runs in one direction: your clomipramine (Anafranil) may slightly cut down on how well your thyroid extract is absorbed if you take them at the same moment. Like other oral medicines and certain foods, anything sitting in your stomach alongside thyroid hormone can bind to it and let less get into your system. This is rated minor, and it's really about timing rather than danger.

The simple fix most people use is spacing them apart. Thyroid hormone works best on an empty stomach, so taking it first thing and waiting before your other pills and breakfast usually solves it. Because over-the-counter thyroid extract isn't standardized, I'd genuinely encourage you to loop in your doctor or pharmacist so your thyroid treatment and your clomipramine dose stay on track.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clomipramine page

“A tricyclic antidepressant used mostly for OCD, clomipramine (Anafranil) is unforgiving of shifts in its blood level, which is why its 236 supplement interactions deserve genuine wariness. Most of the list involves metabolism: herbs that speed up or slow down the liver enzymes handling clomipramine can drag its level too low or push it…”

About Thyroid Extract

What is Thyroid Extract?

Thyroid Extract
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Weight management
  • Sluggish metabolism
  • General thyroid support

Thyroid extract supplements are made from dried animal thyroid gland and may contain real thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), but the amounts in over-the-counter products are not standardized and can be unpredictable. Self-treating a thyroid problem with these supplements can be risky, so always work with a doctor or pharmacist and use prescription thyroid medicine when treatment is needed.
