Tree Turmeric and Sildenafil

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Tree Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Sildenafil falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Tree Turmeric in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Sildenafil

Sildenafil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2C9.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear sildenafil. The berberine in tree turmeric appears to slow that enzyme down a bit. When clearance slows, sildenafil can hang around longer and reach higher levels than usual, which may bump up its typical effects, things like headache, facial flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or a drop in blood pressure.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is mostly a theoretical concern backed by lower quality evidence, so it isn't a guaranteed reaction. Sildenafil is also broken down by another enzyme (CYP3A4), which softens the impact. Still, if you're considering tree turmeric supplements, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially since you shouldn't change your sildenafil dose on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Sildenafil also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence A

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear sildenafil out of your system. The berberine in tree turmeric appears to slow that enzyme down. When the cleanup crew works slower, more sildenafil can linger in your blood, which means its effects (and its side effects) may be stronger than expected.

For sildenafil, that could mean more headache, facial flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or a bigger drop in blood pressure. That blood pressure piece matters most if you also take nitrates or blood pressure meds. Honestly, the food amounts in cooking aren't the worry here, but concentrated berberine supplements are. Before combining them, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can check your full med list.

About Sildenafil

What Is Sildenafil Used For?

Brand name: Revatio

Sildenafil treats two distinct conditions depending on the product. Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are approved for erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Generic sildenafil tablets and oral film are also approved for ED.

Revatio and several generic sildenafil products (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) are used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow the disease from getting worse. Revatio oral suspension and injection are also approved for PAH in children ages 1 to 17.
