HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Vadadustat
Vadadustat falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Turmeric interacts with.
There is concern that turmeric might cause hepatotoxicity, especially when highly bioavailable formulations are used in high doses.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's what's going on with turmeric and Vadadustat (Vafseo), the medicine you take to help your body make more red blood cells when you have anemia from chronic kidney disease. This isn't about turmeric changing how the drug works or how it's cleared. Instead, the worry is that both can be tough on your liver. Vadadustat already carries a caution about raising liver enzymes, and concentrated turmeric supplements, especially the high-absorption kinds taken in big doses, have been linked to liver irritation in some people.
To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on scattered case reports, not strong studies. The turmeric you sprinkle on food is very unlikely to cause a problem. Before starting a concentrated curcumin supplement, though, check with your pharmacist or doctor, and mention any unusual tiredness, belly pain, dark urine, or yellowing skin.

About Turmeric
What is Turmeric?
- Joint pain and arthritis
- Inflammation
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Skin conditions
Turmeric is a popular spice whose main active compounds, curcuminoids, are studied mostly for inflammation and joint pain. Some research is promising, but quality is mixed and curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. For most people, dietary amounts are safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated supplements, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition.
