Diazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Vinpocetine interacts with.

Theoretically, vinpocetine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that vinpocetine weakly inhibits CYP2C9. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with vinpocetine and Valium (diazepam): your body partly clears diazepam using a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In test-tube studies, vinpocetine seems to mildly slow that enzyme down. If that held true in real life, diazepam could be cleared a little slower and build up, which might mean more of its usual effects, like extra drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, or feeling unsteady.

The important part is that this is only theoretical, based on lab research, and it has never actually been seen in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since both can make you sleepy on their own, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you already feel very tired on diazepam.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
