Why this applies to Formoterol

Formoterol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Vinpocetine interacts with.

Theoretically, vinpocetine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that vinpocetine weakly inhibits CYP2C9. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for your inhaler. In a test tube, vinpocetine seems to weakly block a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In theory, blocking that enzyme could let drugs it handles build up a little. The catch is that this has only been seen in lab studies, never actually shown in people, so it's a pretty soft signal.

On top of that, formoterol isn't really cleared by CYP2C9 in a meaningful way, so this particular pathway likely isn't a big concern for it. If anything ever did nudge formoterol levels up, you might notice more of its usual effects like a fast or pounding heartbeat, shakiness, or jitteriness. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before adding vinpocetine.

About Formoterol Oral Inhalation

What Is Formoterol Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Foradil Aerolizer, Atimos Modulite, Oxis Turbohaler, Perforomist, Foradil Certihaler

Formoterol fumarate inhalation solution is used for the long-term maintenance treatment of airway narrowing (bronchoconstriction) in adults with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is taken twice daily — morning and evening — as a regular, ongoing treatment.

Important limits: This medication is not for relieving sudden COPD flare-ups or breathlessness in the moment, and it is not approved to treat asthma. A separate short-acting inhaler should always be on hand for sudden symptoms.
