Studies report varying evidence on whether or not wild lettuce contains hyoscyamine, an anticholinergic drug. If it does, it appears to be in very low amounts. Nevertheless, there have been case reports of individuals consuming large amounts of wild lettuce experiencing anticholinergic-related side effects, such as constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, and sweating. Therefore, if you are already taking a drug with anticholinergic effects, you should be cautious about combining it with wild lettuce as the risk of side effects may be increased.

Here's the simple version: Solifenacin (Vesicare) works by calming overactive bladder muscles, and it does this through an anticholinergic action. The concern with wild lettuce isn't about how your body breaks the drug down, it's that wild lettuce may carry its own mild anticholinergic activity. Stack two things with similar effects and you can get more of the same side effects.

With solifenacin, that usually means dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness, or feeling overheated. To be fair, the evidence here is weak, and any anticholinergic content in wild lettuce seems very low. The case reports involved people taking large amounts. Still, since you're already on an anticholinergic, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Solifenacin Used For?

Brand name: Vesicare

Solifenacin tablets (including the brands solifenacin succinate and VESIcare) are approved for adults with overactive bladder — specifically the symptoms of sudden urges to urinate, leaking urine due to those urges (urge urinary incontinence), and needing to urinate very frequently.

VESIcare LS oral suspension is approved for a different use: treating neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) — a bladder control problem caused by nerve damage or a nervous system condition — in children aged 2 years and older. This liquid formulation is dosed by the child's weight.
