What’s inside
Full disclosure
Agaricus Bisporus SAP is a single-ingredient supplement: agaricus mushroom mycelium extract, a concentrate derived from the common white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). The product contains no inactive ingredients or fillers.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold for agaricus mushroom doesn't yet support its use for any condition listed in our data. Researchers have looked at it for allergic rhinitis (hay fever), osteoporosis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chemotherapy side effects, and Crohn disease, but the evidence is insufficient to rate whether it actually works for these purposes.
If you're considering this supplement for a specific health goal, talk with your pharmacist about what the current research actually shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Agaricus mushroom is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and nausea—mild issues that many people don't experience.
Rare but serious adverse effects have been reported: allergic reactions (including rashes and swelling of the lips), liver damage (hepatotoxicity), and a lung condition called interstitial lung disease. Three cases of severe liver damage, including two that were fatal, occurred in women with cancer who took agaricus mushroom during chemotherapy.
Because long-term safety data are limited, the supplement is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding—there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe for you or your baby.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
