Bee Pollen Complex Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Bee Pollen Complex against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains three active ingredients: bee propolis, bee pollen, and royal jelly. Bee propolis is a resin-like substance made by honeybees; bee pollen is pollen collected and concentrated by bees; and royal jelly is a nutritious secretion produced by worker bees.
The product also includes inactive ingredients (vegetable cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, stearic acid, crospovidone, silica, and vegetable magnesium stearate) that serve as fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these ingredients is mixed and often limited. Bee propolis shows possibly effective evidence for oral mucositis (mouth sores) and herpes labialis (cold sores), and possibly effective for diabetes.
Bee pollen does not appear to help athletic performance and is listed as possibly ineffective for hay fever and diabetes; evidence for other uses is insufficient. Royal jelly is possibly effective for menopausal symptoms but possibly ineffective for hay fever, physical performance, and diabetes; evidence for hair loss is insufficient.
If you're considering this product for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist about what the evidence actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
All three ingredients are generally well tolerated short-term, but allergic reactions are the main concern—especially in people sensitive to bee products. Bee pollen carries particular risk if you have a history of pollen allergies (especially to ragweed, chrysanthemums, or daisies), and can rarely trigger severe reactions including anaphylaxis, kidney failure, or acute hepatitis.
Royal jelly can cause serious allergic reactions in people with asthma or atopy (a tendency toward allergies), including anaphylaxis and death. The most common side effect of bee propolis is headache, reported in about 7% of people taking it.
Propolis can also cause contact dermatitis or cheilitis (lip inflammation) topically. Safety information is not adequate for pregnancy or breastfeeding for any of these ingredients—avoid use if you are pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before starting this product if you take warfarin (blood thinners), blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), or other blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs. Bee propolis may also affect how your liver processes drugs metabolized by CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP3A4, or CYP2E1 enzymes.
Use the medication search tool on this page to look up your specific drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking for support with cold sores, mouth sores, or menopausal symptoms and you don't take warfarin or blood pressure medications, this product may be worth discussing with your pharmacist. But if you have any pollen allergies, a history of asthma or allergies in general, or take warfarin or blood pressure drugs, you should check with your pharmacist before trying it.
Since all three ingredients can trigger allergic reactions, and the evidence for most uses is limited, it's worth confirming this is right for your situation.

Bee Pollen Complex by Puritan's Pride Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bee Pollen Complex by Puritan's Pride contains three bee-derived ingredients—bee propolis, bee pollen, and royal jelly—that together interact with a significant number of medications.
The most serious concern is warfarin (a blood thinner), which all three ingredients may affect: propolis and bee pollen might decrease warfarin's effectiveness, while royal jelly might increase bleeding risk. You'll want to talk with your pharmacist before adding this product if you take warfarin.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Bee propolis also theoretically may raise blood levels of drugs broken down by several liver enzymes (CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP3A4, and CYP2E1 metabolizers)—these effects are moderate in severity. Additionally, propolis and bee pollen may increase bleeding risk with other blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs.
Royal jelly may lower blood pressure and could pose a risk if you take blood pressure medications (antihypertensives).
Altogether, these interactions span 1,025 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Bee Pollen Complex with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Bee Propolis
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, propolis might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that propolis water extract and the propolis constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, can inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, evidence from an animal model shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases INR, suggesting that propolis can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP1A2. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP1A2 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP1A2 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C19. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C19 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C19 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C9. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C9 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C9 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2D6. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2D6 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2D6 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, propolis might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1.
In vitro research shows that propolis can inhibit CYP2E1. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, propolis might decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
Animal research shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases the international normalized ratio (INR). This effect has not been reported in humans.
Royal Jelly
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, royal jelly might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research suggests that royal jelly might lower blood pressure.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Royal jelly might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin.
In one case, an 87-year-old male who was previously stabilized on warfarin developed hematuria and was found to have an INR of 7.29 after taking a royal jelly supplement for one week.
Bee Pollen
Warfarin (Coumadin)
There is some concern that bee pollen might interact with warfarin and increase the risk of bleeding.
In one case report, a patient on warfarin had a stable international normalized ratio (INR) of 1.9-3.3 for 9 months. The patient's INR was found to be 7.1 after starting bee pollen granules one teaspoon twice daily for approximately one month. The patient's warfarin dose was decreased by approximately 11% in order to return the INR to the therapeutic range while continuing the bee pollen supplement.
