Chlorella Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Priority One Nutritional Supplements
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chlorella against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorella by Priority One Nutritional Supplements
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a single-ingredient supplement: chlorella, a type of freshwater algae. It comes in a vegetarian capsule with rice chelate as an inactive ingredient.
The product contains no other active ingredients — just the chlorella itself.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence here is mixed and mostly thin. Chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency, but for brain tumors, fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.
If you're interested in it for one of those other reasons, talk to your doctor about what the research actually shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, but here's the catch: product quality and purity vary a lot, so you can't always count on what you're getting. Common side effects include allergic reactions, stomach cramping, constipation or diarrhea, nausea, gas, fatigue, and skin sensitivity to sun.
Most of these are mild and often settle down in the first two weeks. Rarely, severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis have been reported.
Safety data overall is limited. Chlorella is rated possibly safe in pregnancy, but lactation safety isn't established.
If you're pregnant or nursing, the data isn't there to say yes or no, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this, double-check if you're on warfarin (Coumadin) — chlorella can make it less effective. Also flag any medications that cause photosensitivity or sun sensitivity, because chlorella may add to that effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella might be worth considering if you're dealing with pregnancy-related iron deficiency and your doctor is on board. But if you take warfarin or any photosensitizing medication, check with us first — those interactions are real.
Given the quality variation and limited long-term safety data, it's a supplement that deserves a conversation with your pharmacist before you start.

Chlorella by Priority One Nutritional Supplements Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Priority One Nutritional Supplements' Chlorella interacts with medications in two important ways.
The biggest concern is warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Chlorella is high in vitamin K, which reduces how warfarin works — there's at least one case report of someone's warfarin therapy failing after starting chlorella.
If you take warfarin, you'll want to check with us before starting this.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorella can also cause photosensitization (sun sensitivity), meaning it may add to the effects of photosensitizing drugs — medications that make your skin more reactive to sunlight. If you're on one of those, you're at higher risk for sun-induced skin reactions when taking chlorella.
Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications. Run your exact prescriptions through the checker on this page before you start.

Chlorella
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
