HelloPharmacist Scorecard of GABA Trex Grape Flavored Chewables by NS
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
GABA Trex contains two active ingredients. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used as a sweetener and studied mainly for dental health.
L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea, included here for potential effects on alertness and cognitive function. The product also contains inactive ingredients — stearic acid, citric acid, stevia extract, silica, natural grape flavor, and magnesium stearate — which act as binding and flavoring agents in the chewable tablet.
Does it work?
Not established
Xylitol is likely effective for reducing dental cavities when used regularly. For ear infections (otitis media) and dry mouth, xylitol is possibly effective, though evidence is less robust.
The evidence for Gulf War Syndrome and cystic fibrosis is too thin to rate. L-theanine is possibly effective for supporting cognitive function, but we don't have strong evidence in our data for age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, anxiety, OCD, or cancer.
If you're taking this for a specific health goal, the science is strongest for dental cavity prevention.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Xylitol is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but high doses (30–40 grams at once) can cause diarrhea, bloating, and gas. It's toxic to dogs, so keep it away from pets.
L-theanine may cause headaches, drowsiness, or vivid dreams in some people, and long-term safety in humans hasn't been well studied. Pregnancy and breastfeeding data for L-theanine are insufficient — the safety notes advise against using supplements during these times; talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) — L-theanine may enhance their effect and lower your blood pressure further. Also clear it if you use sedatives, sleep aids, or other CNS depressants, or if you take antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications (serotonergic drugs), all of which may have additive effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may work for dental health and possibly for attention, but the bigger question is medication interactions. If you take blood pressure medication, sedatives, or antidepressants, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first — L-theanine can potentially affect how they work.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the data just isn't there, so discuss it with your healthcare provider.

GABA Trex Grape Flavored Chewables by NS Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GABA Trex Grape Flavored Chewables by NS contains L-theanine, which interacts with blood pressure medications and CNS depressants (drugs that slow your central nervous system).
The most serious concern is with antihypertensive drugs — L-theanine may lower your blood pressure further, potentially causing dizziness or lightheadedness if you're already taking a blood pressure medication.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-theanine also carries a minor interaction with CNS depressants like sedatives, anxiety medications, and sleep aids. The theoretical risk is additive drowsiness, though the real-world significance isn't clear.
Additionally, L-theanine has a minor interaction with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, and similar agents); study results conflict on whether it affects serotonin, and no cases of serotonin syndrome have been reported with it.
Xylitol, the other active ingredient, was checked and has no interactions documented in our data. Altogether, these interactions span 565 individual medications.

For each ingredient in GABA Trex Grape Flavored Chewables with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
