Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Here's the gist: telmisartan (Micardis) already lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. Theanine, the calming amino acid from tea, may nudge blood pressure down a little too. Stack the two and, in theory, your blood pressure could dip a bit more than expected. That might show up as feeling lightheaded, dizzy when you stand up, tired, or a touch off-balance.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. The concern comes from animal research, not real-world human studies, so for most people it's a mild, mostly theoretical caution. Tea-sized amounts are unlikely to matter; concentrated supplements are more likely to. If you check your pressure at home, keep an eye on the numbers, and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding theanine.

What Is Telmisartan Used For?

Brand name: Micardis

Telmisartan tablets — sold as Micardis and the generic telmisartan — treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Bringing blood pressure down lowers the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Micardis and telmisartan tablets are also approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes in patients 55 or older who are at high cardiovascular risk and cannot take ACE inhibitors. This use is for patients with a history of conditions such as coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, TIA (mini-stroke), or high-risk diabetes with signs of organ damage.
