Motherwort Extract Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Motherwort Extract against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: a Motherwort herb extract (from Leonurus cardiaca). It comes as a liquid in a base of purified water, certified organic alcohol (12–15%), and vegetable glycerin.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The data shows motherwort may be effective for bleeding. For other uses—including anxiety, amenorrhea (absent periods), asthma, and alcohol use disorder—the evidence isn't strong enough to rate.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work for those; it means we don't have reliable trial data to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Motherwort appears generally well tolerated in the short term, though human safety data are limited. Most common side effects from oral use are diarrhea and stomach irritation.
Taking amounts larger than 3 grams orally can cause uterine bleeding. Topically, it may cause contact dermatitis or photosensitivity reactions (sensitivity to sun).
The safety data advise against use in pregnancy because motherwort is traditionally thought to stimulate the uterus. There isn't enough information on file about safety during breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check whether you take any CNS depressants (medications that make you drowsy or calm your central nervous system)—sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, opioid painkillers, some antihistamines, or certain antidepressants. Motherwort may increase their sedating effects.
Use the medication checker on this page to confirm your specific drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Motherwort Extract may help with bleeding, but evidence for other common uses is limited. If you take any CNS depressants—sleep aids, anxiety medications, opioids, or certain antidepressants—check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.
It's not recommended in pregnancy. A conversation with your own healthcare provider can help you decide whether it fits your health goals.
