Stinging nettle is generally well tolerated in adults when used as directed, though constipation and diarrhea are the most commonly reported side effects from oral use. One case of liver injury has been reported after a month of taking a nettle-containing herbal tea — though that product had other ingredients too.

If you touch the fresh plant itself, you'll get itching, rash, and a stinging sensation that can last over 12 hours; in rare cases, placing the raw leaf in your mouth caused severe swelling.
