The evidence for these specific strains varies. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for antibiotic-associated diarrhea, bacterial vaginosis, and Helicobacter pylori.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is also possibly effective for respiratory tract infections. For most other conditions listed in the research — hay fever, anxiety, cognitive decline, and athletic performance — the evidence is insufficient to rate these strains.

The Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains in this product are generally well tolerated in healthy people, though gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort have been reported rarely. If you're seriously ill, have a weakened immune system, or are in the hospital, talk with your doctor first — there have been rare cases of these bacteria entering the bloodstream in critically ill patients.
For Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium bifidum, the safety data in pregnancy and lactation are labeled possibly safe, but limited data exist; for Lactobacillus acidophilus, pregnancy is possibly safe, and we hold no rating for lactation. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about use while breastfeeding.

Bifidobacterium longum BB536
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
HOWARU Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
