Spearmint Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by doTERRA
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Spearmint against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Spearmint by doTERRA
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: spearmint. It's a concentrated liquid form, not the mild herb you'd find in tea or gum.
There are no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for spearmint's effectiveness isn't established in our data. It's been studied for age-related cognitive decline, memory, flatulence, irritable bowel syndrome, postoperative nausea, and osteoarthritis, but in each case the reliable evidence to rate it is insufficient.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means we don't have solid proof yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Spearmint as food or tea is generally well tolerated. But this is a concentrated supplement, not food, and the safety data on supplement doses is limited.
Stick to small amounts and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it regularly. Topical use (oil on skin) can cause allergic dermatitis or lip irritation in sensitive people.
Orally, spearmint may trigger allergic swelling in the mouth or an allergic reaction in people with spearmint sensitivity. Pregnancy and lactation safety data on file is mixed — pregnancy ratings include both "Likely Safe" and "Possibly Unsafe", so there isn't enough clear data to know either way.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on drugs that damage the liver (hepatotoxic medications) or CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications). Both are Moderate severity concerns.
No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a concentrated spearmint supplement, not the mild herb in tea. It may interact with sedatives and liver-processed drugs, and the safety evidence at supplement doses is thin.
If you take any regular medications — especially for anxiety, sleep, heart or blood pressure, or liver issues — check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it. Pregnant or nursing?
Run it by your healthcare provider first.

Spearmint monograph & interactionsSpearmint by doTERRA Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
doTERRA Spearmint interacts with two medication categories through its single active ingredient.
The most serious concern is with drugs that damage the liver (hepatotoxic drugs) — animal research shows that high doses of spearmint can increase markers of liver injury and potentially cause liver damage, a Moderate severity risk. The other documented interaction is with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications), also Moderate severity.
Animal work suggests spearmint's main compound has sedative effects, but human data showing the opposite — spearmint gum actually increased alertness — makes the real-world effect unclear.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 580 individual medications.
Because the evidence is mixed and much of it comes from animal studies rather than people, the actual risk in everyday use isn't certain. But if you take any blood pressure or heart medications, sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, or medications processed by the liver, check your exact drugs with the tool below before starting this product.

Spearmint
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, spearmint might alter the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Animal research suggests that (-)-carvone, a major constituent of spearmint, has sedative effects. However, in humans, chewing spearmint-flavored gum induced arousal effects.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, high doses of spearmint might increase the risk of liver damage when taken with hepatotoxic drugs.
Animal research suggests that drinking spearmint tea for 30 days can increase markers of liver damage, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and cause liver degeneration and necrosis, in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
