Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: L-theanine at 200 mg per capsule. Theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea that's thought to promote calm focus without heavy drowsiness.

The capsule itself is made of gelatin.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: calm relaxed focus naturally.
  • We looked for evidence on: Stress, Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), Cognitive function, Insomnia, relaxation, mental clarity — and 1 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Theanine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Cognitive function (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Theanine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), Insomnia, Stress.

L-theanine is possibly effective for cognitive function — the evidence supports some benefit there. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and cancer, the evidence isn't established well enough in our data to rate it one way or the other.

If you're considering theanine for any of those other uses, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current literature says.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, but how safe it is over the long haul isn't well studied. Common side effects reported include headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep duration, and vivid dreams.

One pediatric case of facial tics was reported, but the child had a history of tics and they stopped when theanine was discontinued, so a causal link wasn't established. There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding, so the data advises against use during those times.

If you're pregnant or nursing and interested in theanine, talk with your obstetrician or pediatrician for personalized guidance.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Theanine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 565 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking Theanine 200 mg, double-check your blood pressure medications with the interaction tool — theanine can lower pressure and might make them work too well. Also verify any central nervous system depressants (sleep aids, sedatives, certain pain relievers) and serotonergic drugs (some antidepressants or migraine meds) you're on.

No interactions are documented for the one ingredient we checked — but that's not a guarantee none exist, so verification matters.

Formulation

For over 40 years unsurpassed purity, quality and efficacy 100% solar production Zero carbon footprint

All solar Calm relaxed focus - naturally

Theanine has been shown to enhance alpha brain-wave activity, which is associated with a relaxed, but still focused and alert state. Theanine promotes the production of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, which support relaxation and calm. The observation that the caffeine in green tea is less intense than that of coffee result from green tea's abundance of Theanine. In fact, Theanine is often used to reduce the uncomfortable effects of caffeine and to support a relaxed state. Theanine can also help to diminish perceived stress and tension while promoting calm attention and focus. In short, Theanine naturally supports the brain and its neurotransmitters promoting calm, relaxed focus without drowsiness.

Formula

200 mg of soothing theanine

Andrew Lessman's Theanine provides 200 mg of pure Theanine - one of the most uniquely beneficial and unusual of amino acids. First of all, unlike other amino acids, Theanine is not a building block of protein, but is almost exclusively found in the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) where it accounts for both its distinctive flavor, as well as its unique calming properties. Plus, because Theanine can cross the blood brain barrier, it can deliver its beneficial properties directly to the brain and nervous system.

Each ingredient & the kinds of drugs it affects

L-Theanine3 drug types · 565 drugs

Antihypertensive Drugs

Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cns Depressants

Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.

Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D
Serotonergic Drugs

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
