Why this applies to Venlafaxine

Venlafaxine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group 1,3-dmaa interacts with.

1,3-DMAA strongly inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzymes in vitro. Theoretically, 1,3-DMAA can increase levels of CYP2D6 substrates. Some of drugs that are CYP2D6 substrates include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the thing about mixing DMAA with your venlafaxine (Effexor). Lab studies suggest DMAA can block an enzyme called CYP2D6, which is one of the ways your body breaks down venlafaxine. If that breakdown slows, more of the drug can build up in your system, which may mean stronger effects and more side effects like a faster heartbeat, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, nausea, or trouble sleeping.

What worries me most is that DMAA is itself a powerful, banned stimulant that raises blood pressure and heart rate, and venlafaxine already nudges norepinephrine up. Stacking the two could really strain your heart. The enzyme data is only test-tube level, so it's theoretical, but DMAA isn't safe to begin with. Please skip it and talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

Venlafaxine is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) across all available formulations. Extended-release capsules (including Effexor XR) are also approved for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder (PD).

Extended-release tablets are approved for major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Immediate-release venlafaxine tablets are indicated for major depressive disorder only.
