Here's the simple version: butorphanol (Stadol) is a strong opioid pain reliever that can already make you feel drowsy, dizzy, or foggy, and it can slow your breathing. 5-HTP, which your body turns into serotonin, has also been linked to sleepiness in studies. Put them together and those calming effects may stack up, so you could feel more sedated or lightheaded than you'd expect.

I'll be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how each one works rather than strong human studies, so it isn't a reason to panic. Still, since butorphanol can affect your breathing and alertness, it's smart to mention the 5-HTP to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them. Don't change either one on your own.

What Is Butorphanol Injection Used For?

Brand name: Stadol

Butorphanol Tartrate Injection is used to manage pain severe enough to require an opioid when other treatments are not adequate. It is also used as a preoperative or pre-anesthetic medication and as a supplement to balanced anesthesia during surgical procedures.

Butorphanol Tartrate Injection is also indicated for relief of pain during labor in patients at full term in early labor. Because of serious risks including addiction, misuse, and overdose, it is reserved for situations where alternative treatments are ineffective or not tolerated.
