Dextromethorphan HBr falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group 5-htp interacts with.

Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the simple version: that cough medicine in Vicks Formula 44, dextromethorphan, can nudge serotonin levels up a bit in your body. 5-HTP does the same thing, since your body turns it straight into serotonin. Put them together and you're stacking two serotonin-raising products on top of each other.

The worry is something called serotonin syndrome, which can bring on agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or feeling confused. I'll be honest with you though, this concern is theoretical and based on how these compounds work, not on real reported cases with 5-HTP. An occasional dose for a cough is far less likely to cause trouble than heavy or regular use. Still, since both touch serotonin, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
