SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Rasagiline
Rasagiline falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group 5-htp interacts with.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing with rasagiline (Azilect): it's an MAO-B inhibitor, which means it slows down one of the enzymes that breaks down serotonin and similar messengers in your brain. 5-HTP, on the other hand, gives your body more raw material to make serotonin. So you've got one product building serotonin up while the other keeps it from being cleared away as quickly. Stacked together, serotonin levels can climb higher than intended.
When serotonin gets too high, you can run into what's called serotonin syndrome: agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, tremor, muscle twitching, or confusion. Honestly, this concern is mostly theoretical and hasn't been clearly reported with 5-HTP in people, but rasagiline raises the stakes enough that I wouldn't combine them on your own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rasagiline page
“Rasagiline (Azilect) treats Parkinson's disease by blocking monoamine oxidase, the same enzyme that clears tyramine from aged and fermented foods. That shared pathway explains most of the 14 major-rated interactions on this page.”

About 5-htp
What is 5-htp?
- Low mood or depression
- Anxiety and stress
- Sleep problems
- Migraine headaches
- Fibromyalgia
- Appetite or weight management
5-HTP is a compound your body uses to make serotonin, and people take it as a supplement hoping to improve mood, sleep, and headaches. Some early research is promising, but the overall evidence is limited and not conclusive. Because it can affect serotonin and may interact with medicines, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
About Rasagiline
What Is Rasagiline Used For?
Brand name: Azilect
Rasagiline tablets — sold as Azilect, Rasagiline, and Rasagiline mesylate — are approved to treat Parkinson's disease (PD). They can be used on their own (monotherapy) or added to other Parkinson's medications, including levodopa.
When used alongside levodopa, rasagiline helps manage Parkinson's symptoms that are not fully controlled by levodopa alone. Your doctor may adjust your levodopa dose when the two are combined.
