Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Tasimelteon
Tasimelteon falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group 5-htp interacts with.
In clinical trials, 5-HTP has been associated with drowsiness and somnolence.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: tasimelteon (Hetlioz) helps reset your sleep clock by acting like melatonin, so its main effect is making you feel sleepy at night. 5-HTP can also bring on drowsiness because your body turns it into serotonin, which influences sleep. Put the two together and you may feel extra groggy, more deeply asleep, or sluggish and foggy the next morning.
I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is a theoretical concern based on how each one works, not something proven in head-to-head studies. It's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially since both are aimed at sleep. Don't start, stop, or change either one on your own.

About 5-htp
What is 5-htp?
- Low mood or depression
- Anxiety and stress
- Sleep problems
- Migraine headaches
- Fibromyalgia
- Appetite or weight management
5-HTP is a compound your body uses to make serotonin, and people take it as a supplement hoping to improve mood, sleep, and headaches. Some early research is promising, but the overall evidence is limited and not conclusive. Because it can affect serotonin and may interact with medicines, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
