Methyclothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Apple Cider Vinegar interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of apple cider vinegar with diuretic drugs might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
A case of hypokalemia related to chronic use of apple cider vinegar has been reported. There is some concern that people taking apple cider vinegar along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia.

Here's the thing to keep an eye on with this pair. Methyclothiazide is a thiazide-type water pill, and one of its known quirks is that it can push potassium out of your body through your urine. Apple cider vinegar, when used in large or daily amounts over time, has been linked in at least one case report to low potassium too. Put the two together and the worry is that your potassium could dip lower than it should.

To be fair, this is mostly theoretical and based on weak, anecdotal evidence, not strong studies. A splash of vinegar on a salad is very unlikely to matter. But if you're swigging concentrated ACV every day, low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat. Mention your ACV habit to your pharmacist or doctor so they can check your potassium if needed.

What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?

  • Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
