Ashwagandha + Citalopram
Citalopram brand name: Celexa.
Citalopram falls into 2 drug categories that Ashwagandha can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Theoretically, ashwagandha might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Ashwagandha interacts with whole categories of medication. Citalopram falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ashwagandha in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Citalopram
Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.
In vitro research shows that ashwagandha extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for citalopram (Celexa): lab studies hint that ashwagandha might speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps break this antidepressant down. If that happened in real life, your body could clear citalopram a little faster, which might make it work less well. In theory, you could notice your depression symptoms creeping back, like low mood or trouble sleeping.
That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is rated a minor interaction, and the evidence comes only from test-tube research, not from actual people. Citalopram isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't get flipped around. For most folks this likely won't cause a real problem, but since both can affect mood, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding ashwagandha.

Serotonergic Drugs
2 of 2Citalopram also falls under Serotonergic Drugs.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
If you take citalopram (Celexa) for depression, here's the honest picture with ashwagandha. Citalopram is an SSRI, so it raises serotonin in your brain. Some early animal research hints that ashwagandha may also nudge serotonin pathways. In theory, stacking the two could add to serotonin activity, which is why this shows up as a possible interaction.
That said, the evidence here is thin and mostly from animal studies, with no real-world reports of problems when these are combined. The realistic worry is mild serotonin-related effects like jitteriness, sweating, restlessness, or trouble sleeping. Serious serotonin syndrome would be very unlikely from this pairing alone. Still, since both touch serotonin, it's smart to check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting ashwagandha, and watch for new symptoms.
What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

- General well-being (adaptogen)
Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb most often taken to help with stress, anxiety, and sleep, and some small studies suggest it may help, though the evidence is still limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
About Citalopram
What Is Citalopram Used For?
Brand name: Celexa
Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.
Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.

Citalopram Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Citalopram as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Ashwagandha — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
