Tegaserod falls under Serotonergic Drugs — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.

Some animal studies have reported that ashwagandha can enhance serotonergic transmission by altering certain serotonin (5-HT) receptors. However, there is no evidence to suggest that ashwagandha increases the risk of serotonin-related effects, and there have been no published case reports of serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonergic drugs. Nevertheless, due to the lack of extensive studies on the matter and the fact that ashwagandha appears to affect serotonergic pathways, it would be prudent to exercise caution when combining it with drugs that affect serotonin. Here's the gist for Tegaserod (Zelnorm). This medicine works on serotonin receptors in your gut to get things moving and ease that constipation side of IBS. Ashwagandha may have a mild touch on serotonin pathways too, based mostly on animal studies, so on paper the two could nudge in the same direction.

The good news is this is a low-level concern. There are no real-world reports of problems when ashwagandha is combined with serotonin-acting drugs, and the evidence here is thin. In theory, you might notice a bit more gut activity like cramping or loose stools, but that's not well established. To be safe, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before pairing them so they can keep an eye on how you feel.

What Is Tegaserod Used For?

Brand name: Zelnorm

  • Tegaserod is used in women younger than 65 years of age to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C; a condition that causes stomach pain or cramps, bloating, and infrequent or difficult passage of stools). Tegaserod is in a class of medications called serotonin agonists. It works by improving muscle movement and increasing production of fluid in the bowels.
