Why this applies to Aripiprazole Lauroxil

Aripiprazole Lauroxil falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Ayahuasca interacts with.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase levels of serotonin, which may have additive effects with serotonergic drugs.
In vitro and animal research shows that harmaline and harmine, constituents of ayahuasca, strongly and reversibly inhibit monoamine oxidase A and weakly inhibit monoamine oxidase B. The dimethyltryptamine and tetrahydroharmine constituents of ayahuasca have also demonstrated serotonergic activity. A case of serotonin syndrome characterized by tremors, sweating, shivering, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and disorientation has been reported in a 36-year-old male who consumed 100 mL of ayahuasca while taking fluoxetine 20 mg daily. Combining serotonergic drugs with ayahuasca might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with Aristada (aripiprazole lauroxil): it's a long-acting injection that releases medicine into your body slowly over weeks, and it touches your brain's serotonin and dopamine systems. Ayahuasca contains compounds that act like MAO inhibitors and can push serotonin levels up. In theory, stacking the two could nudge serotonin too high and raise the chance of a reaction called serotonin syndrome, with signs like shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, nausea, or feeling agitated.

I'll be honest that this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how these substances work, not on strong studies with this exact drug. Still, because the injection lingers for weeks and ayahuasca is potent and unpredictable, please don't combine them without first talking to your doctor or pharmacist.

Theoretically, ayahuasca might increase plasma concentrations of CYP2D6 substrates.
Ayahuasca contains beta-carboline alkaloids, including harmine and harmaline. In vitro research suggests that the beta-carboline alkaloids might inhibit CYP2D6 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for your long-acting aripiprazole shot (Aristada). Your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear aripiprazole out of your system. Lab studies suggest the harmine and harmaline in ayahuasca can block that enzyme. If that happened in a person, aripiprazole could build up higher than normal and stick around longer, which may mean more side effects like restlessness, drowsiness, muscle stiffness, tremor, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded when standing.

I want to be honest: this is only shown in test-tube research, not in real people, so it stays theoretical for now. That said, ayahuasca is also a strong MAOI brew with serious risks of its own. Please don't make any changes to your injection, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before going anywhere near ayahuasca.

Here's the gist for Aristada (aripiprazole lauroxil), the long-acting injection your care team gives you. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear aripiprazole from your body. Lab studies hint that the beta-carboline compounds in ayahuasca can block that enzyme. If that happened in people, aripiprazole could build up a bit and you might notice stronger side effects like drowsiness, restlessness (a need to keep moving), dizziness, or muscle stiffness.

Aripiprazole injection is used to treat schizophrenia and to provide maintenance treatment for bipolar I disorder in adults. Different injectable products carry these approvals.

Abilify Asimtufii is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and as maintenance monotherapy for bipolar I disorder in adults. Aristada is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults, with Aristada Initio used specifically to help start Aristada therapy.
