In vitro and animal research suggests that Baikal skullcap binds to GABA-A receptors and causes sedation. Theoretically, Baikal skullcap might cause additive therapeutic and adverse effects when used concomitantly with drugs with sedative properties. Preliminary clinical research has not identified clinically relevant sedation after use of Baikal skullcap; however, a thorough evaluation of safety outcomes has not been conducted.

Here's the short version: Baikal skullcap may have a mild calming, sedative quality of its own. In lab and animal studies, some of its compounds seem to nudge the same GABA pathways in the brain that help us relax and feel drowsy. Hydrocodone is a strong opioid pain medicine that already slows the brain and breathing, so stacking another sedative on top could, in theory, add to that drowsiness.

What that might look like with hydrocodone is feeling extra sleepy, foggy, dizzy, or slower breathing. The good news is this concern is theoretical, the evidence is weak, and human studies haven't shown meaningful sedation from the herb. Still, with a powerful opioid, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
