Baikal Skullcap and Insulin Aspart, Insulin Degludec

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin Aspart, Insulin Degludec

Insulin Aspart, Insulin Degludec falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Baikal Skullcap interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of Baikal skullcap with antidiabetes drugs might enhance blood glucose lowering effects.
Baicalein, a constituent of Baikal skullcap, has alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity in vitro. Animal research also suggests that Baikal skullcap enhances the antidiabetic effects of metformin. However, in a small human study, taking Baikal skullcap extract did not enhance the antidiabetic effects of metformin, although it did modestly lower glucose levels during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Until more is known, use cautiously.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Ryzodeg combines two insulins (aspart and degludec) that already do one main job: lower your blood sugar. Baikal skullcap may, on its own, nudge blood sugar down a little too. So the concern here is simple addition. If you stack the herb on top of your insulin, your numbers could drift lower than expected, raising the chance of hypoglycemia (shakiness, sweating, fast heartbeat, confusion, or in severe cases passing out).

Honestly, the evidence is thin. This is mostly lab and animal work, and one small human study showed only a modest effect. It isn't a dangerous combo, but since insulin doses are precise, I'd loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding it and keep checking your glucose closely if you do.
