Here's the gist with bay leaf and vigabatrin (Sabril). Vigabatrin already tends to make people feel tired, dizzy, or sleepy on its own. Bay leaf contains a compound called methyl eugenol, which in animal studies showed calming, sedative-like effects. So the worry is that piling the two together could add to that drowsiness, leaving you groggier or more unsteady than usual.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's theoretical, drawn from lab and animal work, not real human reports. The pinch of bay leaf in your soup is not going to do this. The concern is really about concentrated bay leaf supplements or essential oils. Before adding anything like that, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Vigabatrin

What Is Vigabatrin Used For?

Brand name: Sabril

Vigabatrin is used to treat two types of seizure conditions. For refractory complex partial seizures (seizures that have not responded well to other treatments), vigabatrin oral solution and tablets are used as an add-on therapy in patients 2 years of age and older — it is not a first-line treatment. Sabril, Vigadrone, and vigabatrin-branded products carry this indication.

For infantile spasms — a specific type of seizure disorder in very young children — vigabatrin oral solution is used as a standalone (monotherapy) treatment in infants 1 month to 2 years of age. Vigafyde oral solution is indicated specifically for infantile spasms monotherapy in this same age group. In all cases, treatment is only appropriate when the potential benefits outweigh the risk of permanent vision loss.
