Here's the simple version: both belladonna and benztropine work the same way. They each block acetylcholine, that messenger that helps control things like saliva, sweat, heart rate, and your bladder. When you stack two anticholinergics together, those effects don't just add up, they can really pile on.

So with belladonna on board, you may notice more of benztropine's typical side effects: dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, trouble urinating, a racing heartbeat, and feeling confused or foggy. In older adults especially, that confusion can get serious. This warning is based on how these drugs work (the pharmacology), not on a big pile of patient studies, but the logic is solid enough that I'd take it seriously. Belladonna itself can be quite toxic, so please don't pair these without talking to your doctor or pharmacist first.

What Is Benztropine Used For?

Brand names: Cogentin, Cogentin Injection

Benztropine mesylate is used as part of the treatment for all forms of parkinsonism — a group of conditions that cause tremors, stiffness, and slowness of movement. It is not a cure, but it helps ease symptoms when used alongside other therapies.

It is also used to control extrapyramidal disorders (abnormal, involuntary muscle movements and stiffness) that can be caused by antipsychotic drugs such as phenothiazines. It is not used for tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled muscle movements that develop after long-term use of certain psychiatric drugs).
