Benztropine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Bacopa interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use might decrease the effectiveness of both agents.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.

Here's the simple version. Benztropine works by lowering the activity of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger in your nervous system. Bacopa appears to do the opposite, nudging acetylcholine levels up. So in theory, the two could partly cancel each other out. Bacopa might make your benztropine work a little less well, and benztropine might blunt whatever benefit you're hoping for from bacopa.

If that happened, you could notice your Parkinson's symptoms or tremor creeping back. I'll be honest though, this is based on how these substances behave on paper, not on solid human studies, so it may not amount to much in real life. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding bacopa, especially if your symptoms feel well controlled right now.

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.

What Is Benztropine Used For?

Brand names: Cogentin, Cogentin Injection

Benztropine mesylate is used as part of the treatment for all forms of parkinsonism — a group of conditions that cause tremors, stiffness, and slowness of movement. It is not a cure, but it helps ease symptoms when used alongside other therapies.

It is also used to control extrapyramidal disorders (abnormal, involuntary muscle movements and stiffness) that can be caused by antipsychotic drugs such as phenothiazines. It is not used for tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled muscle movements that develop after long-term use of certain psychiatric drugs).
