Black Tea and Safinamide Mesylate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)

Why this applies to Safinamide Mesylate

Safinamide Mesylate falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Black Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Black tea contains caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis. In a case report, a patient that consumed 10-12 cups of caffeinate coffee and took the MAOI tranylcypromine presented with severe hypertension. Hypertension was resolved after the patients switched to drinking decaffeinated coffee.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

If you take Xadago (safinamide) for your Parkinson's symptoms, here's the thing to know about black tea. Safinamide is an MAO-B inhibitor, and the caffeine in black tea can act on the same MAO pathways. In theory, drinking large amounts of caffeine alongside an MAOI could push your blood pressure up too high. The worry comes from older case reports involving heavy coffee drinking (think 10 to 12 cups), not a cup or two of tea.

To be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on how these compounds behave, so a normal moderate tea habit is unlikely to cause trouble for most folks. Still, if you notice a pounding headache, racing heart, or sudden high blood pressure, that's worth attention. Before changing anything, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor about how much tea is reasonable for you.

About Black Tea

What is Black Tea?

  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health support
  • Blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Digestive complaints
  • Weight management
  • Antioxidant support

Black tea is a popular caffeinated drink made from the fully oxidized leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, and it contains caffeine and antioxidant plant compounds. Moderate tea drinking is generally safe for most adults and may modestly support heart health and alertness, but it is not a proven treatment for any disease. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, sensitive to caffeine, or taking medicines, talk to your pharmacist or doctor.
