Breadfruit and Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate, Methocarbamol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate, Methocarbamol

Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate, Methocarbamol falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. In vitro research shows that certain flavonoid constituents from breadfruit root extract can inhibit thromboxane formation and reduce platelet aggregation.
Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The piece of this combo pill that matters here is the aspirin. Aspirin already works by thinning the blood and keeping platelets from clumping together. Lab studies suggest certain compounds in breadfruit (mostly from concentrated leaf or root extracts, not a normal serving of the fruit) may also nudge platelets in that same direction. Stacked together, the theory is that your blood could become a little slower to clot than expected.

In real life this might show up as easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that take longer to stop. I want to stress this is theoretical and comes from test-tube work, not strong human studies, so don't panic. Eating breadfruit as food is very unlikely to be an issue. If you're considering breadfruit leaf teas or supplements, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate, Methocarbamol page

“Alcohol is the single riskiest thing to combine with Robaxisal C (aspirin, codeine phosphate, and methocarbamol). Beer and wine both carry major ratings backed by solid human evidence, because codeine and methocarbamol already slow breathing and reflexes, and alcohol deepens that sedation.”

About Breadfruit

What is Breadfruit?

  • Source of nutrition and energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes and blood sugar support
  • Inflammation and joint discomfort
  • Skin conditions

Breadfruit is a starchy tropical fruit eaten as a staple food, and its leaves are used in traditional medicine for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. As a food it is nutritious and generally safe, but the medicinal use of leaf teas or extracts has very little human research to back it up. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using breadfruit products for a health condition.
