GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS
Why this applies to Dolutegravir
Dolutegravir falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with breadfruit and your dolutegravir (Tivicay). Your body clears dolutegravir mainly through a process called glucuronidation (the UGT enzyme system). A compound found in breadfruit, called artocarpin, has been shown in lab dish studies to slow that same enzyme. In theory, that could mean dolutegravir lingers a bit longer and rises a little higher in your blood, which might bump up side effects like headache, trouble sleeping, or nausea.
That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is only test-tube data, and it has never been seen in real people. Eating breadfruit as food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated leaf teas or extracts are the bigger question mark. Since staying steady on your HIV medicine matters, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using breadfruit products.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Calcium (major), St. John's Wort (major), Bitter Melon (moderate) and Black Pepper (moderate).
By severity: 3 major · 46 moderate · 16 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dolutegravir page
“Dolutegravir (Tivicay) works only when its blood level stays high enough to keep HIV suppressed, so a supplement that drags that level down can let the virus rebound, and this list warrants genuine care. Three of the 65 entries are rated major.”

About Breadfruit
What is Breadfruit?
- Source of nutrition and energy
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes and blood sugar support
- Inflammation and joint discomfort
- Skin conditions
Breadfruit is a starchy tropical fruit eaten as a staple food, and its leaves are used in traditional medicine for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. As a food it is nutritious and generally safe, but the medicinal use of leaf teas or extracts has very little human research to back it up. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using breadfruit products for a health condition.
