Why this applies to Lamivudine, Raltegravir

Lamivudine, Raltegravir falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Breadfruit might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by uridine diphosphoglucuronosyl transferase (UGT). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, in vitro evidence shows that the breadfruit constituent artocarpin inhibits UGT. Theoretically, this could decrease the clearance and increase levels of glucuronidated drugs. Some drugs that are metabolized through glucuronide conjugation include acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) and oxazepam (Serax), haloperidol (Haldol), lamotrigine (Lamictal), morphine (MS Contin, Roxanol), zidovudine (AZT, Retrovir), and others.

In the combo pill Dutrebis, the raltegravir piece is the one to focus on here. Your body clears raltegravir mainly by attaching a sugar molecule to it through an enzyme called UGT. A compound in breadfruit, artocarpin, has slowed that same enzyme in lab dish studies. In theory, that could let raltegravir build up a bit, which might mean more of its usual effects like headache, nausea, trouble sleeping, or tiredness.

But I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube work, never from people, and eating breadfruit as a food is very different from a concentrated leaf extract. I would not lose sleep over enjoying breadfruit as a meal. Before using breadfruit leaf teas or supplements, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.
