Why this applies to Nimodipine

Nimodipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension. Animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can decrease heart rate and weaken the force of heart muscle contractions, which may lower blood pressure.
Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDIURIL), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the gist for nimodipine: it's a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels, so it naturally lowers blood pressure as part of how it works. Concentrated breadfruit leaf products (teas or extracts, not the fruit on your dinner plate) may also gently push blood pressure down. Stacking the two could add up, so the concern is your pressure dropping a little too far.

In real terms, that might mean dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling faint, or a headache, especially when you stand up. I'll be honest though: this is a theoretical worry based mostly on animal studies, not strong human proof. Eating breadfruit as food is very unlikely to matter. Since nimodipine is given after a serious brain bleed, please run any breadfruit supplement past your doctor or pharmacist first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Nimodipine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, breadfruit might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes; until more is known, use with caution. In vitro, the breadfruit constituent artocarpin can inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. Also, animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can weakly inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. However, it is unclear if this inhibitory activity causes a clinically meaningful effect on the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone), sertraline (Zoloft), and many others.

Here's the gist for nimodipine. Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down. In lab dishes and animal studies, certain compounds in breadfruit leaves appear to slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened in people, more nimodipine could stick around in your blood, and since this drug relaxes blood vessels, that could mean a bigger drop in blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadedness, or a faster heartbeat.

The honest part: this is only a theoretical concern based on weak, early evidence, and eating breadfruit as a regular food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated leaf teas or extracts are a bigger question mark. Nimodipine is used in a serious setting after a brain bleed, so please run any breadfruit supplement past your doctor or pharmacist first.

What Is Nimodipine Used For?

Brand names: Nimotop, Nymalize

Nimodipine — available as capsules and oral solution — is used to improve neurological outcomes after a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of bleeding that occurs around the brain when an intracranial berry aneurysm ruptures. It works to reduce the incidence and severity of ischemic deficits (areas of the brain damaged by reduced blood flow) that can follow this kind of bleed.

This use applies across nimodipine capsules, nimodipine oral solution, and Nymalize oral solution. It is indicated for adult patients regardless of how severe their neurological condition is at the time treatment begins.
