Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Breadfruit interacts with.

Theoretically, breadfruit might inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes; until more is known, use with caution. In vitro, the breadfruit constituent artocarpin can inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. Also, animal research shows that breadfruit leaf extract can weakly inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes. However, it is unclear if this inhibitory activity causes a clinically meaningful effect on the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), felodipine (Plendil), lansoprazole (Prevacid), ondansetron (Zofran), prednisone (Deltasone), sertraline (Zoloft), and many others.

Here's the gist for Technivie (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir). Part of this combo, especially the paritaprevir, is broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab and animal studies hint that compounds in breadfruit leaves might weakly slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let a little more of the medication build up, which might mean more chance of things like nausea, tiredness, itching, or trouble sleeping.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube and animal data, not real people. Eating breadfruit as a food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated leaf teas or extracts are the bigger question mark. Since this medication treats your hepatitis C, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any breadfruit products.

What Is Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Technivie

  • The combination of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir is usually used in combination with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol), but sometimes it is used alone to treat a certain type of chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus). Ombitasvir is a hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A inhibitor. It works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body. Paritaprevir is a protease inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of HCV in the body. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor. It helps to increase the amount of paritaprevir in the body so that the medication will have a greater effect. It is not known if ombitasvir, paritaprevir, or ritonavir prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
