Theoretically, caffeine might reduce the effects of felbamate and increase the risk for convulsions.
Animal research suggests that a high dose of caffeine 161.7 mg/kg can decreases the anticonvulsant activity of felbamate. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

If you take felbamate (Felbatol) for seizures, here's the gist on caffeine. The concern is that caffeine might work against felbamate's ability to calm down abnormal brain activity, which in theory could make seizures more likely to break through. Caffeine is a stimulant, so it makes a little sense on paper that it could nudge things in the wrong direction.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This warning comes only from animal studies using very high caffeine doses, far beyond what a normal coffee habit looks like. It has never actually been reported in people. So a cup or two of coffee is unlikely to be a problem, but don't go overboard on energy drinks or high-dose caffeine pills. Run your usual intake past your doctor or pharmacist to be safe.

About Felbamate

What Is Felbamate Used For?

Brand name: Felbatol

Felbamate is not a first-line seizure medication. It is used only when a person's epilepsy has not responded well enough to other treatments and the seizures are severe enough that the serious risks of this drug are considered acceptable.

In adults, felbamate can be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain), with or without spreading to become a full seizure. In children, felbamate is used as an add-on treatment for both partial and generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Felbatol is specifically labeled for these uses in both adults and children.
