These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Calcium interacts with whole categories of medication. Tigecycline falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Calcium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
1 of 2Why this applies to Tigecycline
Tigecycline falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Calcium interacts with.
Advise patients to take oral quinolones at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after calcium supplements or calcium-fortified foods. Taking calcium at the same time as oral quinolones can reduce quinolone absorption. Calcium binds to quinolones in the gut.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's some good news that takes the worry off the table: tigecycline (Tygacil) is given as an IV infusion, not as a pill you swallow. The calcium interaction on file is all about calcium binding to certain antibiotics in your gut and blocking their absorption. Since tigecycline goes straight into your vein, there's no gut step for calcium to interfere with.
In short, your calcium supplement isn't going to weaken tigecycline the way it can with oral antibiotics like ciprofloxacin or doxycycline. This warning was written for a broad antibiotic group, and it really applies to the oral ones. If you're ever switched to a pill antibiotic, separating it from calcium by a few hours matters. For now, check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions.

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS
2 of 2Tigecycline also falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS.
Advise patients to take oral tetracyclines at least 2 hours before, or 4-6 hours after calcium supplements. Taking calcium at the same time as oral tetracyclines can reduce tetracycline absorption. Calcium binds to tetracyclines in the gut.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here is some good news that takes the worry out of this one. The interaction on file is about calcium grabbing onto tetracycline antibiotics in your gut and keeping them from being absorbed when you swallow them. But tigecycline (Tygacil) is given as an IV infusion, not as a pill you take by mouth. Because it goes straight into your vein, it never mixes with calcium in your stomach, so the usual spacing concern does not apply here.
If you were taking an oral tetracycline like doxycycline, I would tell you to separate it from calcium by several hours so the antibiotic still works. With IV tigecycline, your calcium supplement is fine to continue. Still, it is always smart to let your care team know everything you take so they have the full picture.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tigecycline page
“Tigecycline (Tygacil) is an intravenous antibiotic usually reserved for serious or resistant infections, and its supplement list deserves real attention. The two major-rated entries come first: oleander, a heart-toxic plant whose compounds may build to dangerous levels with certain antibiotics on board, and PABA, which can blunt the an…”

About Calcium
What is Calcium?
- Bone health and osteoporosis prevention
- Dietary calcium deficiency
- Heartburn relief (calcium carbonate antacids)
- Supporting healthy teeth
- High blood pressure support during pregnancy
Calcium is an essential mineral your body needs for strong bones, nerve signaling, and muscle function, and supplements can help fill gaps when diet falls short. Most people do best getting calcium from food, and supplements should be used at the lowest dose needed. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you have kidney problems or take other medicines.
About Tigecycline Injection
What Is Tigecycline Injection Used For?
Brand name: Tygacil
Tygacil (tigecycline for injection) is approved for adults 18 and older to treat three types of serious bacterial infections: complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal (stomach and intestinal) infections, and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (pneumonia caught outside a hospital).
It is not approved for diabetic foot infections or for pneumonia caught in a hospital setting, including ventilator-associated pneumonia — clinical trials showed it did not work well enough for those uses and was associated with higher mortality in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia.
