Here's the gist: Levemir (insulin detemir) already does one main job, which is to lower your blood sugar steadily over the day. The dream herb, Calea zacatechichi, has shown a blood-sugar-lowering effect too, but only in animal studies, so this is a theoretical concern rather than something proven in people. The worry is simply that the two together could push your sugar down a little further than expected.

If your blood sugar dropped too low, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, confused, or get a pounding heartbeat, the usual signs of hypoglycemia. This isn't a reason to panic or change anything on your own. If you want to try this herb, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep a closer eye on your glucose readings for a while.

Levemir (insulin detemir) is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults and children with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. It is a basal insulin, meaning it works around the clock to keep background blood sugar levels steady.

Levemir is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis (a dangerous buildup of acids in the blood that requires a different type of insulin).
