Here's the key thing to understand: in this particular pairing, it's the cannabis that may be affected, not your lovastatin. The THC in cannabis is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, and lovastatin can mildly block that enzyme. In theory, that could let THC linger a bit longer, nudging up cannabis-related effects like feeling extra high, dizzy, drowsy, or having a faster heartbeat.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave in the lab, not something proven in real patients, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Lovastatin's own effects (cholesterol lowering, occasional muscle aches) aren't expected to change here. Still, if you use both, mention it to your doctor or pharmacist, and go easy with cannabis until you know how you feel.

Lovastatin also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, cannabis may increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that cannabis can inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 enzymes, which might decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates. In vitro research also shows that cannabis extracts modestly inhibit the CYP3A4 metabolism of testosterone; extracts providing the specific cannabinoids CBD and cannabigerol (CBG) had stronger inhibitory effects than extracts containing THC and CBD.

Here's the gist: your body clears lovastatin using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest cannabis may slow that enzyme down a bit. If lovastatin gets broken down more slowly, more of it can hang around in your blood, which can nudge up the risk of its typical side effects, mainly muscle aches, muscle weakness, and rarely more serious muscle breakdown or liver irritation.

I want to be honest about how solid this is: the evidence comes from test-tube research, not real patients, so it's theoretical and may not amount to much in practice. Still, since lovastatin is fairly sensitive to CYP3A4 blockers, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor if you use cannabis regularly. Don't change anything on your own.

About Lovastatin

What Is Lovastatin Used For?

Brand names: Mevacor, Altocor

Lovastatin is used to lower high LDL ("bad") cholesterol and total cholesterol in people whose levels have not improved enough with diet alone. It is also used to slow the buildup of plaque in the arteries (coronary atherosclerosis) in people who already have coronary heart disease.

In adults without existing heart disease but with high cholesterol and low HDL ("good") cholesterol, lovastatin tablets are approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, unstable angina, and the need for procedures to open blocked arteries. Lovastatin tablets are also approved for adolescents aged 10–17 with a specific inherited condition called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (heFH), when diet changes alone haven't been enough.
