Cinchona and Ozanimod Hydrochloride

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS

Why this applies to Ozanimod Hydrochloride

Ozanimod Hydrochloride falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Cinchona interacts with.

Theoretically, taking cinchona with other QT interval-prolonging drugs might cause an additive effect and increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.
Quinidine and quinine, which are constituents of cinchona, prolong the QT interval.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the connection worth knowing. Cinchona bark naturally contains quinine and quinidine, and both can stretch out the heart's electrical recovery time (what doctors call the QT interval). Zeposia (ozanimod) can also slow the heart rate and affect heart rhythm, especially when you first start it. Stacking these two together could, in theory, raise the chance of an irregular heartbeat.

I'll be honest with you though: this concern is based on how these compounds behave on paper, not on real cases of people taking them together. Still, since ozanimod already has heart rhythm cautions, I wouldn't combine it with cinchona without a green light. If you ever feel dizzy, faint, or notice a racing or fluttering heartbeat, get checked. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Cinchona

What is Cinchona?

Cinchona
  • Malaria (historical/traditional)
  • Fever
  • Leg cramps and restless legs
  • Digestive upset and loss of appetite
  • Bitter tonic

Cinchona bark is the natural source of quinine and has been used for centuries to treat malaria and fever, but the bark itself is not standardized and can be unpredictable and risky. Modern medicine uses purified, dose-controlled quinine instead, and the supplement form carries real dangers, including serious heart and blood problems. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy.
