This combination pill packs three ingredients, and two of them already calm the nervous system. Codeine is an opioid pain reliever and chlorzoxazone is a muscle relaxer, so both can leave you drowsy, foggy, or slow to react. Corydalis yanhusuo contains plant compounds that, in animal studies, also seem to have a sedating, relaxing effect on the brain.

Put them together and the worry is simply extra sleepiness, dizziness, or slowed breathing, especially when you stand up or drive. Keep in mind this caution is theoretical, based on how things work in the lab rather than proven in people. Still, since both already make you sleepy, check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also inhibit CYP2D6.

This combination pill has a wrinkle worth knowing about. The codeine part is actually a prodrug, meaning your body has to switch it on using an enzyme called CYP2D6 before it can relieve pain. Corydalis yanhusuo may slow that same enzyme down. So instead of building codeine up, blocking CYP2D6 could leave you with less pain relief, because less codeine gets converted into its active morphine form.

I'll be honest, this is theoretical and based mostly on lab work, not real patient studies, so the real-world effect may be small or unnoticeable. Still, if you rely on this medicine for pain and notice it isn't working as well, that's worth mentioning. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.
