Here's the simple version: your body relies heavily on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down brexpiprazole (Rexulti). Corydalis yanhusuo contains compounds, including berberine, that may slow that enzyme down. If the cleanup crew works slower, more brexpiprazole can linger in your system, which can nudge up its effects and side effects, things like drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness, weight gain, or feeling unusually sluggish.

I'll be straight with you, though: this concern is theoretical, based on lab pharmacology rather than real people taking these two together. So it's a reasonable caution, not a reason to panic. Brexpiprazole isn't a prodrug, so the direction here is more drug, not less. Before you combine them, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how you feel.

Here's the gist for Rexulti (brexpiprazole): your body relies partly on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medication out. Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine, which lab and early human research suggests can slow that same enzyme down. If CYP3A4 works more slowly, brexpiprazole may build up a bit higher than usual in your blood.

What might that feel like? Potentially more of brexpiprazole's typical effects, things like drowsiness, restlessness or feeling the urge to move (akathisia), dizziness, or weight changes. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how the herb behaves in the lab, not proven harm in people. Please don't stop or change anything on your own. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before combining them.

About Brexpiprazole

What Is Brexpiprazole Used For?

Brand name: Rexulti

Brexpiprazole tablets are approved for two uses in adults: as an add-on (adjunctive) treatment alongside antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD), and as a treatment for schizophrenia. These uses apply to both the generic brexpiprazole tablets and Rexulti.

Rexulti has one additional approved use: treating agitation associated with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease in adults. Rexulti is also approved for schizophrenia in adolescents ages 13 and older. Note that Rexulti is not approved for dementia-related psychosis without agitation from Alzheimer's disease, and it is not meant to be used on an as-needed basis for Alzheimer's-related agitation.
