Here's the simple version: chlorpromazine (Thorazine) already makes a lot of people feel drowsy, foggy, or relaxed because it calms activity in the brain. Corydalis yanhusuo may do something similar on its own. So when you pair them, the worry is that those calming effects could stack up and leave you more sedated than you bargained for, with extra grogginess, dizziness, or trouble staying alert.

I want to be straight with you, though: this concern is theoretical, based mostly on lab and animal research rather than real human cases, so we can't say it will definitely happen. Still, since chlorpromazine is a strong medication, it's smart to check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding corydalis rather than starting it on your own.

Here's the gist with Corydalis yanhusuo and chlorpromazine (Thorazine). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear chlorpromazine. Corydalis contains berberine, which lab studies and some early human data suggest can slow that enzyme down. If it does, chlorpromazine could clear more slowly and build up a bit, meaning stronger effects and more side effects.

For chlorpromazine, that might look like heavier drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness when standing, dry mouth, or a faster heartbeat. To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab work, not strong human proof, so don't panic. Still, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them so they can keep an eye on you.

What Is Chlorpromazine Used For?

Brand names: Thorazine, Thorazine Spansules

Chlorpromazine is used to manage psychotic disorders and treat schizophrenia. It also controls nausea and vomiting, relieves restlessness and apprehension before surgery, and controls the manic phase of manic-depressive illness. Other uses include relief of intractable hiccups, treatment of acute intermittent porphyria, and use as an adjunct in tetanus treatment.

In children ages 1 to 12, it is used for severe behavioral problems marked by explosive or combative behavior, and for short-term treatment of hyperactive children with conduct disorders. The oral forms are also approved for the management of manifestations of psychotic disorders broadly, in addition to the uses shared with the injection form.
