Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, Corydalis yanhusuo might also inhibit CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for your cancer therapy: Sorafenib is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Corydalis yanhusuo contains berberine, which lab studies and some early human research suggest can mildly slow that same enzyme down. If the enzyme works slower, more sorafenib could linger in your blood, which may turn up its side effects, things like hand-foot skin reactions, diarrhea, rash, high blood pressure, or fatigue.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how the herb behaves, not proven harm in people. Still, sorafenib is a serious cancer drug, so please don't add corydalis on your own. Run it past your oncologist or pharmacist first so they can keep you safe.

Here's the thing to know about pairing Corydalis yanhusuo with Sorafenib (Nexavar): the concern on file is about bleeding. Sorafenib itself can raise bleeding risk in some people, and lab and animal studies hint that compounds in corydalis (including berberine) may make platelets stickier, meaning they clump less easily. Put those together and there's a theoretical chance of more bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or harder-to-stop bleeding.

I want to be honest about the evidence here. This is based only on test tube and animal research, not human studies, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Sorafenib is a serious cancer medicine, so please don't start or stop anything on your own. Just check with your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Sorafenib

What Is Sorafenib Used For?

Brand name: Nexavar

Sorafenib tablets are approved to treat three types of cancer. The first is unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) — liver cancer that cannot be removed with surgery. The second is advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) — kidney cancer that has spread or progressed. Both the brand Nexavar and generic sorafenib tablets are approved for these two uses.

The third use is for locally recurrent or metastatic, progressive differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) — thyroid cancer that has spread or worsened and no longer responds to radioactive iodine treatment. Nexavar and sorafenib tablets are both approved for this use as well.
