Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with NovoRapid (insulin) and damiana: insulin already lowers your blood sugar, and animal studies hint that damiana may nudge blood sugar down a little too. Put the two together and, at least in theory, your blood sugar could dip lower than you expect. That can show up as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, dizziness, confusion, or feeling suddenly hungry.

I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical concern based mostly on animal research, not solid human studies. The small amount in a cup of tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you take insulin, it's worth checking your sugars a bit more closely and giving your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding concentrated damiana supplements.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin page

“Someone injecting insulin (NovoRapid) is often the same person browsing supplements sold for blood sugar support, which is exactly why this list warrants genuine caution. Nearly all 242 entries push glucose one way or the other, most often further down, stacking with insulin and raising the risk of hypoglycemia, meaning dangerously low…”

About Damiana

What is Damiana?

Damiana
  • Low libido / aphrodisiac
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Mood and mild low energy
  • Digestive upset
  • Headache and general tonic

Damiana is a traditional herb most famous as an aphrodisiac and mild mood-lifter, but solid human evidence for any of its uses is very limited. It is generally well tolerated in the small amounts found in teas, but quality studies are lacking, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it—especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
